July 7: 1 Timothy 1-3 & Psalm 67

Your Past Doesn't Define Your Future

Today we started 1 Timothy, and I was struck by something Paul says about his own past. He writes, "I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence I persecuted his people, but God had mercy on me."

Think about that for a second. Paul - who wrote much of the New Testament and made such a huge impact for God - was actually part of the persecution against the church.

But here's what gets me: Paul always talks about God's mercy and how gracious God was to him. He says God used him "as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners."

The same grace and mercy that God extended to Paul, He also extends to you and me. No matter what's in our past, that doesn't have to be our future.

As I mentioned in the episode, we can commit our life to Christ and go all in, and He can rewrite everything in our past and make us new in Him. There might still be consequences for how we've hurt others, but we have such an opportunity to dive into all that God has for us.

What part of your past have you been thinking defines you? Remember this week that God's mercy is bigger than your biggest mistake.
